"This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Guide is designed to help thePolice Service optimise its use of the full range of functionality availableon Airwave to achieve Interoperable Voice Communication. The latterterm is used to describe the capability provided by Airwave that enablespeople, when authorised, to exchange information on a common radionetwork regardless of either organisational or system boundaries.The content of this SOP Guide has been researched widely and ispresented as national good practice. For clarity, where a provision isdeemed essential to successful interoperability, the word "must" is usedto emphasise that a common standard is required.It is strongly recommended that each police force adopts and implementsthis SOP Guide and uses it to compare with and improve any pre-existinglocal policies and practices on the use of Airwave. In doing so, thereviewer should consider whether, under independent scrutiny, currentarrangements would give the same level of effective Interoperable VoiceCommunication as provided for in this SOP Guide.
