Marine Security Operations Centres
The 2004 National Security Policy called for the establishment of Marine Security Operations Centres (MSOCs) as part of a six point plan to strengthen maritime security. Representatives from core federal partner with maritime security-related responsibilities, namely the Canada Border Services Agency, Department of Fisheries and Oceans/Canadian Coast Guard, Department of National Defence, Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Transport Canada, are co-located in the three MSOCs on the East and West Coasts and in the Great Lakes region.
MSOCs leverage the resources and expertise of partners to analyze, generate and disseminate an accurate and timely picture of maritime situational awareness. They enhance maritime security by helping to identify and assess threats, while the responsibility to respond to an identified threat rests with the partners based on their respective mandates (i.e. security, law enforcement, regulatory, safety, etc.).
