ARCHIVED - Government of Canada supports crime prevention efforts in Saskatchewan

The following projects are receiving support from the National Crime Prevention Strategy's Crime Prevention Action Fund and Northern and Aboriginal Crime Prevention Fund:

Specialized Before and After School Program - Ehrlo Community Services, Venture Sport Program, Regina. The specialized after-school program will target approximately 108 Regina inner-city children aged 8-12 (predominantly Aboriginal and chronic runaways) to reduce their engagement in high-risk behaviour and potential involvement in criminal activities. The funding amount is $281,690 over two years and nine months.

Kamsack Detour Youth Inclusion Project - Kamsack Detour Drop-In/Resource Centre, Inc., Kamsack. The project is a neighbourhood-based intervention that aims to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour by creating a safe place where youth can go to learn new skills, take part in pro-social activities with others and get help with their education. The funding amount is $976,175.28 over three years and two months.

Little Red River Crime Prevention Project -106B Paskwawaaskihk Administration, Christopher Lake. The core life skills training develops the participant's skills in a wide range of areas, including self-image and self-improvement; decision-making; smoking, marijuana, and alcohol myths and realities; smoking and biofeedback; advertising awareness; coping with anxiety; communication skills; social skills; and assertiveness. The funding amount is $745,987.73 over two years and 11 months.

Stop Now and Plan - Prince Albert Métis Women's Association, Inc., Prince Albert. This project will use the SNAP (Stop Now and Plan) program in the Westview Community School in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, and will target approximately 112 high-risk Aboriginal boys and girls between the ages of 6-12. The funding amount is $601, 913.15 over three years.

Okanese Youth Lifeskills Program - Okanese First Nation #82, Balcarres. The Okanese Youth Lifeskills Program will target approximately 50 First Nation youth, ages 9-18, to reduce their engagement in high-risk behaviour and educates youth through knowledge and skill development designed to help youth resist peer pressure, build positive self-image, develop effective problem solving skills, and build healthy relationships. The funding amount is $283,084.16 over three years.

Project Venture: Youth Awareness Prevention Program - Lac La Ronge Indian Band, Lac La Ronge. This project will target approximately 260 First Nation youth, ages 10-18, to reduce their engagement in high-risk behaviour and involvement in criminal activities. It is an outdoors experiential youth development program designed for high-risk Aboriginal youth that develops personal skills through outdoor adventure and experiential after-school and summer camp activities.   The funding amount is $846,284 over three years and three months.

Pelican Narrows Life Skills Training Project - Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation, Pelican Narrows. The Pelican Narrows Life Skills Training Program will target approximately 500 First Nation youth, ages 9-15, to reduce their engagement in high-risk behaviour and involvement, or potential involvement, in criminal activities. The funding amount is $351,409.88 over three years.

Touchwood Community Cadet Corps - Pilot Project, Touchwood Agency Tribal Council Inc., Punnichy. The Touchwood Community Cadet Corps program will target 100 Aboriginal youth at risk, both male and female, aged 10-15, living on reserve in south central Saskatchewan. This project will assist youth to achieve better academic outcomes and reduce the delinquency and social predictors of risk. The funding amount is $610,559.52 over three years.

Kahkewistahaw Community Cadet Corps Project - Kahkewistahaw First Nation, Broadview. The project will target a total of 50 male and female Aboriginal youth aged 12-18 and provide a positive alternative to gang involvement, substance abuse and other delinquent behaviours by encouraging the development of positive lifestyle habits through structured activities. The funding amount is $687,777 over three years.

La Loche Project Venture - Northern Village of La Loche, La Loche. Stakeholders have collaborated to replicate a Project Venture crime prevention project which will work with up to 300 high-risk Aboriginal children and youth, ages 11 to 14 years, and their families.  Participants will be engaged in meaningful activities to prevent and reduce substance abuse, drug-related crime, and interpersonal violence. The funding amount is $976,645.44 over three years and five months.
