OTTAWA, September 25, 2011 — Today, on the occasion of the Canadian Police and Peace Officers' 34th Annual Memorial Service, the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, issued the following statement to pay his respects to fallen law enforcement officers. This year four fallen officers were honoured during the memorial service as well as 47 historical officers.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, it is my honour to pay tribute to the lives, service and sacrifice of the Canadian officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten. To our police and peace officers across the country and serving in countries abroad, we express our deep gratitude for your dedication to making our families and communities safe.

The Canadian Police and Peace Officers' Annual Memorial Service gives Canadians an opportunity to formally express their appreciation for the dedication of police and peace officers, who contribute so much to keeping our communities safe and to those who have paid the ultimate price. The Memorial Stone erected on Parliament Hill stands as an enduring reminder of their dedication and their sacrifice; a place to pause, read the names of the fallen and contemplate the contribution they have made.

The Government of Canada greatly values the contribution made by police and peace officers in combating crime in our country. These individuals play a vital role in protecting our country, our communities and our families from harm.”
