ARCHIVED - Statement by Public Safety Minister Toews on the meeting of the Cross-Cultural Roundtable on Security

February 27, 2012 - The Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, today made the following statement about the latest meeting with the Cross-Cultural Roundtable on Security (CCRS) held in Calgary, Alberta:

“Over the weekend, my colleague, Parliamentary Secretary Candice Hoeppner and officials met with the Cross-Cultural Roundtable on Security. This session focused on Canada-U.S. relations, and the work underway to implement the Canada-U.S. Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness Action Plan. The Action Plan sets ambitious, but achievable, goals that will both advance economic opportunity and lead to greater security. Our government is committed to engaging with community leaders from across Canada on this.

Since 2005, the Cross-Cultural Roundtable on Security has played an important role in advising the Government of Canada on the impact of national security matters on Canada's diverse society. Through the Roundtable, prominent members from a number of Canada's cultural communities meet with officials from Canadian government departments and agencies in order to discuss policy and program issues related to national security, build understanding between Government and communities, and to identify any issues of shared concern. Together, the CCRS and the Government are building valuable relationships founded on trust and respect.”
