Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, July 22, 2013 — Today, the Harper Government announced $60 million in financial assistance to support the response and recovery efforts in Lac-Mégantic. The announcement follows the commitment made by Prime Minister Stephen Harper during his July 6 visit.

“Our Government has been on the ground and working with local authorities from the time the derailment occurred. Quebecers can continue to count on our support in their time of need,” said the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of International Development and Minister for La Francophonie. “I am proud that our Government is delivering on the promise made by the Prime Minister during his visit to this town. We will continue to work with the people of Lac-Mégantic as they recover from this tragic event and rebuild their lives and community.”

Of the $60 million announced today, the first $25 million, matching Quebec's commitment, is being provided by Public Safety Canada to support immediate response and recovery needs, which includes things like rescue and evacuation costs, short-term security measures, and removal of hazardous material and damaged structures. The subsequent $35 million, provided by the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, will support the repair and reconstruction of infrastructure, and community economic development activities.

“Our Government is committed to the safety and security of Canadians and this tragic event has compelled a unique response from our Government,” said the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. “Today's funding announcement is another example of how our Government works closely with the provinces and territories to assist Canadians when devastating events like this strike.”

The Government of Canada is pleased to offer Quebec its support by working together to meet the needs of the people of Lac-Mégantic in these difficult circumstances.
