Purpose : |
The project will carry out a comprehensive, structuring and lasting approach aimed at preventing crime and the improving the surroundings by reducing tagging and graffiti. Drawing from the experience gained over the past two years, the project team will apply a new system of assessing and cleaning up wall surfaces that will be more specific to the surfaces to be cleaned, more attractive to the community and more cost effective for the project. It also plans to develop a new wall protection system using wooden panels. Various strategies will be used to encourage members of the public to get more involved in cleaning up and enhancing the neighbourhood and reporting acts of vandalism as soon as possible.
Through community workers, the project will contract 25 young graffiti artists and provide various activities designed to encourage them to practise their art in a legal manner by participating among other things in enhancement activities. In addition, 28 young participants, paid through Service Canada's Skills Link Program, will participate in all aspects of promoting and managing the collection service and lead awareness workshops in schools and in agencies and associations in the neighbourhood. Throughout these measures, they will have mentoring support in developing their abilities and their employment readiness.
