Stream A: Human Trafficking
Overview
In Budget 2019, the Government of Canada announced its intention to establish a whole-of-government approach to combatting human trafficking that built on Budget 2018’s investment of $14.5 million over five years (and $2.89 million per year ongoing) to put in place the Canadian Human Trafficking Hotline. The Hotline is a national multilingual 24/7/365 service operated by the Canadian Centre to End Human Trafficking, which receives funding from the Department of Public Safety Canada through the Contribution Program to Combat Serious and Organized Crime.
On September 4 2019, the Government of Canada announced the new National Strategy to Combat Human Trafficking, which is supported by a total investment of $57.22 million over five years (and $10.28 million ongoing) to address this crime through a whole-of-government approach. The National Strategy will:
- empower victims and survivors to regain self-confidence and control over their lives;
- prevent more of these crimes from taking place;
- better protect those who are most vulnerable to trafficking;
- prosecute human traffickers for their crimes; and
- embrace partnerships with provinces and territories and other organizations to maximize our impact.
A key component of the National Strategy is to provide increased funding for enhanced support and services for victims and survivors of human trafficking, as well as support to help prevent at-risk and vulnerable populations from being trafficked.
The Department’s Contribution Program to Combat Serious and Organized Crime (CPCSOC) supports initiatives, research, partnership building, specialized police services, projects and programs to increase knowledge, raise awareness and/or help advance efforts to combat serious and organized crime, through funding allocations to eligible recipients as described in section 5 of the Terms and Conditions.
