Hello. I'm Bill Blair, Canada's Minister of Emergency Preparedness.
It's Fire Prevention Week, and this year's theme is "Fire won't wait. Plan your escape."
Each year, thousands of house fires occur in Canadian households.
But there are some very simple steps that you can take to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.
First of all, make sure that you have smoke alarms installed inside and outside of your bedroom, and on every level of your home.
Next, ensure that all doors and windows open easily.
And finally, develop a home escape plan – and practice it often.
This Fire Prevention Week, let us also take a moment to recognize the brave and selfless work of Canada's firefighters.
Every day, firefighters put their lives on the line to protect our communities, often in the face of extraordinary danger.
We all have a part to play in keeping our homes and communities safe from the dangers of fire. By planning ahead, you'll know what to do when your smoke alarm sounds.
Thank you, and be safe.
